Senior Game Developer

&ranj - Serious games, gamification and game thinking, located at Rotterdam in the Netherlands

&ranj is achieving positive behavioral change through play for more than twenty years and create true impact with serious games and gamification.
As a Senior Game Developer, I conceived and developed a diverse range of serious games that were both engaging and highly impactful. These projects spanned various technologies and types, including mobile apps for smartphones and tablets, desktop applications, AR games, and even EEG-based neurofeedback games. I also worked on data science-driven games. The technologies I utilized ranged from Unity Game Engine to web-based games using JavaScript Canvas, with custom integrations with various systems, such as Learning Management Systems (LMS), Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams to name just a few. Additionally, I was involved in AI integrations, working with various large language models (LLMs) to enhance gameplay and user experience. My previous experiences also allowed me to advise on various topics, including WebOps CI/CD, software architecture, and Agile development methods, among others.

Dynacommerce is an international company providing end-to-end omnichannel solutions for mobile and fixed telco, cable, media and utility companies.
As a Technical Lead, I led and oversaw technical projects and teams working with agile processes, across an entire Business Line. Provided technical guidance and support, discussed requirements and functionalities with the products owners, and have been strongly involved with the technical architectures and operational choices.
As a Manager, I estimated and planned resources allocated to projects, was the line manager of multiple developers and was included in the recruitment process (technical evaluation, applications reviewing, and interviews).

Hired by We4people BV, I worked on a mission in-house at Dynacommerce for 7 months.
As a Lead Developer, I lead an agile team working with Kanban methodology. Improving our working processes while working closely with WebOps CI/CD principles in order to deliver high quality projects.
As a Web Development Engineer, I first helped consolidate our main product, providing new feature meeting our customers’ needs. Furthermore, I helped design a state-of-the-art mass market Front-End, and I wrote the specifications and implemented an API layer used by this interface to communicate with the Back-End logic.

3D Ouest is a company of 15 people that creates custom and dedicated web applications for local governments.
As part of the main development team, I analyzed the need of local governments and create custom web applications that meet their requirements.
As part of the Research & Development team, I studied the relevance of new tools and web technologies.
Finally, I was in charge of finding and conceiving new ways to improve the efficiency of the internal developments. To fulfill that goal, I created an internal library that can unify and generate interfaces for new software.

Recognized as a Master of Science and Engineering, the 'Diplôme d'Ingénieur' is an advanced, prestigious and very selective academic degree of higher education.
Protected by the French law and submitted to strict government supervision, it is more valued by companies than a university master degree in terms of career opportunities and responsibilities.
I have achieved this master's degree through an apprenticeship program at 3D Ouest. This has allowed me to acquire four years of experience in the Web Development field.

In the second year of my master I was part of the Erasmus program. I went on exchange for one semester to Roskilde University in Denmark. I have studied broad field such as Design, Usability, User Experience, Robot technology and Software Conception.
As a member of group of 3 students, we have worked on a master project for five months in order to show the capabilities of procedural generation in computer science. Using Perlin Noise, we achieved to generate landscapes, textures, animals or even IA behaviour and create a procedural and infinite game world.

As part of the &ranj development team and in collaboration with War Child, I contributed to multiple versions of the Can’t Wait to Learn game.
This curriculum-based, educational tablet and phone game was designed specifically for and by children affected by conflict.
I collaborated on versions for Chad, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan, Uganda, and Ukraine, tailoring each to the target audience with local stories and artwork.
The deployment methods were carefully chosen to ensure the games could reach as many children as possible.

Outbreak Ready 2

As part of the &ranj development team and in collaboration with the READY Initiative, led by Save The Children, I contributed to the Outbreak Ready 2 game.
This web game is designed to prepare NGO health workers for infectious disease outbreaks.
Set in the fictional country of Thisland, the simulation immerses learners in realistic crisis scenarios that require data-driven decision-making, effective communication, and humanitarian leadership under pressure.
Participants interact with a dynamic digital narrative with multiple characters, manage diverse information sources like emails, dashboards, and rumors while facing time-sensitive challenges.
The simulation’s feedback system offers targeted insights, helping learners refine their strategies.
The game offers multiple possible outcomes, with the learner’s decisions shaping the progression and resolution of the story.

TENEA

As part of the &ranj development team, I contributed to the creation of the TENEA game, an immersive mixed-reality assessment tool developed for TEN Executive Assessments to evaluate the leadership behaviors of C- and board-level candidates.
This innovative, three-hour experience places participants in a high-pressure scenario as the new CEO of the fictional Kumara Corporation, a company with a mission centered on circular sustainability.
The assessment environment was fully designed by &ranj, featuring a laptop simulation of a desktop OS as the main interface. Simultaneously, a nearby TV runs a simulated news channel, both systems interconnected via a shared backend.
The content on both platforms dynamically evolves based on player actions or decisions made by the assessors, creating a seamless and responsive experience.

FathomVerse

As part of the &ranj development team, I contributed to the development of FathomVerse, a mobile game that blends entertainment with a mission to protect our oceans.
Scientists are collecting massive amounts of images and video to study marine life and assess ocean health. AI can help researchers analyze this deluge of visual data more efficiently.
Before AI can be used for ocean exploration, machine learning models need to be trained to identify ocean animals.
FathomVerse transforms players into citizen scientists, helping to train AI to identify marine life by reviewing and tagging real ocean images.
Players can perform missions, level up, unlock awards, learn about marine ecosystems, and even discover potential new species, all while supporting global ocean research efforts.

Team Up!

As part of the &ranj development team, I contributed to the game Team Up!.
Team Up! is a multiplayer serious mobile game developed for Erasmus MC to train nursing and medicine students in interprofessional collaboration.
The game immerses players in lifelike, high-pressure scenarios where they must work together to diagnose and treat a virtual patient.
Each player has distinct roles and actions, encouraging teamwork and communication to share critical information and deliver the best possible care.
Players interact through a virtual file and in-game chat to simulate real-world interprofessional dynamics.

Equalture

As part of the &ranj development team, I collaborated with Equalture to develop a series of innovative, game-based assessments designed to remove bias from the hiring process and improve diversity within organizations.
These short, engaging games replace traditional intelligence and personality tests, providing a more accurate measure of a candidate's skills and behavior.
Each game is unique and built on validated psychological constructs, ensuring reliable measurement of qualities like involvement and cognitive ability.
Candidates receive personalized feedback, and hiring teams gain insights into actual behavior rather than relying on subjective impressions or resumes.

Streetwise

As part of the &ranj development team, I contributed to the creation of Streetwise, an educational road safety game developed for ANWB.
Designed to complement ANWB’s school-based road safety program, Streetwise empowers children to learn about road safety at home in an engaging and interactive way.
Set in a fictional digital world, children face off against mischievous “streetwackos” by completing traffic-themed missions that teach them the rules of the road.
The game features a unique augmented reality mission, bringing the Streetwise world to life, and bonus real-world challenges encouraging children and parents to explore traffic safety together.

Dockers infrastructure

My IT Infrastructure is now running entirely on Dockers. All the services are now standardize and are running simultaneously and independently. Isolated services improve the stability, and provide a strong control over the resources and traffic flows.
Using docker-compose, I associated those services together, defining precisely responsibilities, permissions and access rules and so on improving drastically the security of the applications and the data.
Traefik is a reverse proxy and load balancer. Controlling and redirecting the traffic, it is also automatically generating and renewing SSL certificates using Let's Encrypt.
Portainer is a Docker management solution. Providing control, logs and data over all the docker stacks.
For the monitoring of my application, I used multiple coupled services. Using Node Exporter, Cadvisor, Telegraf to gather server, dockers and traffic metrics, I aggregate those data in Prometheus and use Grafana to display them. Blackbox exporter and Alertmanager allow me to control and notify me at any time in case of disruption of my services.
Using an automatic system of backups implementing Duplicity, I am able to secure backups and restore any data lost when required.

PIPELINE CI/CD

In order to improve the software quality and provide a quick and effective Feedback during development, I implemented a Pipeline of Continuous Integration and Delivery.
I decided to use Gitlab-CI which is a Gitlab integrated tool used to create a consistent and automated way to build, test, deploy and monitor applications.
Any code change pushed to the Gitlab instance will start an automatic building process that generates dockers defined in a docker-compose file. It will install all required dependencies and apply a set of units and integrations testing.
If the building process is successful, the package will automatically be tagged and deployed to a staging environment that would allow to perform a live review of those changes.
All reviews environments are automatically generated and destroyed on the fly depending of the number of open features (Open Pull Requests) and contain only the concerned improvements.
The staging is a production-like environment that allows to review a pre-release version.
When this release version is approved, it can be deployed in one click to the production environment. This CI/CD requires minimal manual interaction and increase the predictability of the delivery of the software.

Surogou

"Surogou" is a game world created in real-time using procedural content generation. It was a group project made during my exchange at Roskilde University. The generation of the game world is done using an algorithm known as perlin noise which is used for terrain modelling, distribution of objects and AI behaviour. The main objective of this project was how procedural content generation can be utilized in games, while maintaining high performance and to investigate new opportunities that arises, when applying procedural techniques.

Design period: From September 2015 to January 2016
Grade Obtained: 12 - Excellent (best grade possible in Danish academic grading)
Technologies: Unity 3D, C# and Blender.

Twitter News

"Twitter news" is a an application that allows to keep track of relevant information on Twitter. It does not require a twitter account. By registering a list of hashtags and/or users, it will store all the major information about them and will be displayed in a convenient way when the user requests it. It is also possible to use it as a real time application that gathers feeds from Twitter.

Reperio

"Reperio" is a custom application that manages lost and found properties. It was created for the Vieilles Charrues, the largest music festival in France. It allows the festival-goers to declare what objects they have lost during the festival and be able to track it down if it is recovered. Every year since, I improve the software to fit the new needs of the festival. The network implementation of this software was made in partnership with the association FestivIT.
